Abstract

9292. Mechan & Sons, Mechan, S., and Lewis, A. J. April 21. Ventilating-shaft tops.-Ventilators for ships &c. are constructed with domes covering the upper ends of the air-shafts, and with annular valves arranged beneath the domes and rising when water enters so as to close the air passage between the dome and the shaft. The air-shaft A, Fig. 1, is surmounted by a dome D with a flange D', and may also have an outer flange D<3>. The shaft A and the flange D<2> carry valve seats F, F<1>, beneath which is a valve casing K<1> containing a float valve E and provided with drainage apertures. The valve has guides E<1> working between rollers on wheels E<2>. In a modification, the flange D3 has the same diameter as a wholly or partly openbottomed valve casing K<1>, and the seatings F<1>, F are arranged as near as possible to it. In another modification, the valve casing consists of a cylinder large enough to enclose a conical equivalent of the dome, above which is a contracted mouth.
