Abstract
5788. McFarland, J. D. March 8. Working-fluid supply.-Apparatus for utilizing wave energy to elevate water or other working fluid for use in a motor comprises a float A, Figs. 1 and 2, in which is mounted a motor, for instance an impulse wheel 3. On each side of the float are arranged two series of oppositely inclined fluid passage-ways 8, 10, 12, 13, which, together with end chambers 9, 11 form a continuous zigzag passage-way leading from the intake 6 to a runway 14 leading to the turbine 3. A check valve 16 is situated at the lower end of each passage-way. As the float pitches under the action of the waves, water flows by gravity along the passage-ways but is prevented from flowing backwards on the opposite pitch by the check valves. Water is thus gradually elevated and impounded for utilization in the motor. In a modification, the passages Z, Fig. 5, are not inclined. Check valves y allow water to pass from each passage to the next higher passage, and other check valves y<2> assist in impounding the water. The end chambers W, W<2>, &c. are provided with vents W<1>, W<2>, &c. Sea water may be used or any other fluid. In the latter case the cycle is a closed one, the intake being connected to the discharge of the motor. In a further modification, metallic spheres are used as the motive medium, the check valves in this case being dispensed with, and bars 2, Fig. 6, suspended by links 1, being used for preventing the backward roll of the spheres.
