Abstract

5436. Price, S. W. March 4. Crucible furnaces.-To one of the sides of a crucible furnace is fitted a combustion chamber w fed by one or more liquid-fuel burners having flexible connexions for oil and air or steam which allow the furnace to be tipped without stopping the heating. The combustion chamber is preferably set at an angle to the sides of the furnace so that the gases pass tangentially into the heating-chamber. The crucible stands on supports d and is held in position by blocks e, f, the former projecting from the sides of the furnace and the latter overlapping the upper edge of the crucible. The blocks f may be formed with a rabbet to engage the crucible and to ensure centring. The furnace body has a pouring-spout i, and is fitted with brackets 7 from which may be suspended the mould 3 or a swinging table for supporting the mould. The furnace is tilted by a hand-wheel and spur gearing, and stops are provided to ensure its return to vertical position.
