Abstract
5430. Slack, J. E., and British Mannesmann Tube Co. March 4. Branches and mains, connecting.-A nipple for connecting branch pipes to mains has a reduced bore of tapered form at the part that passes through and projects within the main, so that the nipple may be expanded in place by passing a mandrel therethrough to render the bore uniform. The mandrel is given a combined rotary and axial movement towards the interior of the main. The nipple may be threaded to screw into the main, or may be plain, the outer end having external threads for the connexion of a branch pipe in the usual way. Fig. 5 shows a nipple a having a branchpipe c secured thereto, screwed into a main. a mandrel b with a tapered head b<1> fitting the tapered part of the nipple in a fluid-tight manner having been previously secured therein by a nut c<1> on a threaded extension c. The mandrel is then rotated and advanced by a nut d screwing on to a sleeve m and embracing the non-circular head f<2> of a spindle f, a socket f<1> on the end of the spindle engaging and being pinned or otherwise secured to the non-circular head b<3> of the mandrel. A pin is passed through the head f<2> above the nut, to prevent the mandrel from falling into the main when expansion is completed, and to facilitate its withdrawal. The Specification also describes an arrangement in which the pieces e, f are omitted. In this case, the nut d engages the head b<3> and screws directly on to the nipple a. The nut d may be made in two parts, to facilitate application in any desired position. The tapered end b<1> of the mandrel may have parallel or inclined flutings. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the lower end of the nipple a is plain, the upper end b<5> of the mandrel is threaded, and the nut d has right and left hand threads engaging the mandrel and nipple. With this construction, the mandrel receives an endlong movement as the nut is screwed down, until the shoulders b<2>, d<1> contact, after which the mandrel progresses with a combined rotary and endlong movement.
