Abstract

29,428. Drake, Le R. P., and Cann, C. E. Dec. 21. Platen machines; setoff, preventing; inking- apparatus. - Relates to printing machines, particularly adapted for printing a heading, signature, or the like on circulars, letters, or other documents in rapid succession. The printing - surface, conveniently formed of rubber, celluloid &c., or set-up type, normally bears against an ink pad supplied with fluid ink from a reservoir, and when operated is brought against a pile of circulars &c. supported on a table which is adjustable or provided with adjustable guides, the operation also moving a blotter over the circular after the impression. The machine conveniently comprises a base A with an overhanging arm A<2> providing bearings for the operating-shaft C which carries cranks C<1> engaging trunnions D<1>, D<2> on a support carrying the turn-over printing-surface F. Slides on the trunnions move in vertical guides on the arm A<2>, and a cam H on one trunnion operates in conjunction with fixed pins H<1> to turn over the support when the handle C<2> on the shaft C is operated, a coil spring C<3> in the boss of the handle effecting the return which is limited by an adjustable screw in a lug on the handle boss or crank C' coming against the frame and so limiting the pressure of the printing-surface against the ink pad. This pad consists of a strip J of plush clamped to, and extending below the perforated bottom of, a reservoir which is secured below a casing K formed in the upper member of the arm A<2> and provided with plugged filling- apertures K<2> and a removable cover K<3>. The casing is partly or wholly filled with cotton wool or other absorbent material for the fluid ink employed. The blotting is effected after each impression by one or more blotting-rolls M, or a traversing blotting-band, removably mounted in arms M' pivoted to cams M, which are mounted on spindles O, and operated on the upward movement of the support by the trunnions D', D<2> engaging slots N<1> on the cams. The blotter is thus drawn over the impression, the time and extent of contact being controlled by an adjustable pivoted pawl P resting on the pile of circulars and acting against a pin M<3> on the pivoted arm M'. The machine may be locked in inoperative position with the printing- surface just clear of the ink pad by a bolt passed through apertures in the casing and in an extension of the slide for the trunnion D<2>, a padlock being fitted on the bolt. The circulars &c. may be automatically and singly fed to and delivered from the table, and the machine may be fitted with a counter.
