Sand, gravel, and like distributors.-Apparatus for distributing sand, gravel, &c. on roads before or after tarring consists of a hopper a, Figs. 2 and 5, provided with two delivery pipes d, e, which are fitted with regulating-slides b operated by rods c and with stirrers or mixers f actuated by a crank-shaft h driven by an endless chain from the axle of the travelling wheels. The pipes d, e are arranged before and behind the centre of a revolving perforated disk or spreader i, which is carried by a spindle j' working in a sleeve k, Fig. 3, bolted to the framing. The spindle j is driven by bevel-gearing l from a sleeve o, which is loose on a shaft p and driven by gearing m, n from the axle. The shaft p is pivoted to an arm q on the sleeve k, and is raised by means of a pivoted hand-lever r when it is desired to stop the disk i. A screen v is fixed to each side of the machine to control the spread of the material, and a screen may be carried by a rod 3 fixed in brackets 4 at the rear of the machine.
