Abstract

21,175. Bystron, J., and Vietinghoff, Karl, Baron von. Sept. 17. Iron tanning.-Iron-tanned leather is treated with solutions of basic alkali salts, or alkali bases, or neutral alkali salts of strong acids, whereby some of the iron oxide is converted into an insoluble basic salt which imparts softness to the leather. The leather is treated so as to be as basic as possible, for which purpose basic alkali salts, such as borax, soda, sodium hydrate, &c. are preferably used. The leather may be fulled in a concentrated salt solution. or the solution may be applied to the surface of air-dried leather. After the salt has acted, it may be removed simultaneously with the existing acid iron salts by washing the leather in water.
