Abstract

17,717. Farmer, C. July 31. Sewing - machines; embroidery machines; governing needle thread. - In embroidery and like machines making stitches of variable lengths, the take-up comprises a double-armed lever b having a thread eye at each end pivoted centrally upon the end of a cam-lever a of equal radius. A spring e normally holds the lever b up against a stop d so that the thread eye b<3> is in line with the axis of the camlever a and therefore does not move to control the thread. The thread may be passed once round the pivot-pin b<4> on its way from the thread eye b<2> to the thread eye b<3>. In tightening the thread after the formation of a long stitch, the levers move into the positions shown in Fig. 3 and the eye b<3>, moving from its normal position, pulls thread from supply. Fig. 4 shows an application to embroidery machines; bars J, J' are used instead of thread eyes. A disk or drum R may take the place of the bars J, J<1> and the lever B carrying them.
