Abstract

17,016. Oxbrow, J. F. July 22. [Cognate Application, 28,243/12.] Stowing boats.-Ships' boats are supported independently of one another in tiers in a hangar by swivelling brackets or by slings from a fixed crossbar. According to the form shown on the left of Fig. 2, the boats are supported on trollies which rest upon the swivelling brackets 50, and are raised and lowered in the hangar by means of slings attached to hauling-ropes 74 on each side. The wheels of the trollies are grooved to engage with guide-rails on the sides of the hangar, which rails at the bottom are hinged so as to provide a through opening for the passage of the boats to either side of the ship. The brackets supporting each boat are connected by wire ropes so that they are swivelled together to permit the passage of the boat. According to the form shown on the right of Fig. 2, the boats are slung without trollies by means of slings which are hooked on to the boats and to chains hanging from the cross-bar 2, the boats being provided with hooks attached to bands passing under the keel and with grooved wheels to engage the guiding-rails. The hauling-gear 1 for raising and lowering the boats in the hangar conprises a pair of drums on a shaft having toothed wheels engaging pinions, so that the shaft may be driven by motor or hand. A platform is supported by beams 11, 21 on the hangar to accommodate hauling-gear, from which ropes pass over pulleys 46, 48 for raising and lowering the davit and the boats at the davit respectively.
