Abstract
16,682. McRae, W. A. R. M. July 17. Pulp, preparation of. - In reducing bamboo and like material to fibres for use in the manufacture of paper pulp, the stalks &c. are subjected to a simultaneous rubbing and crushing action over their whole length. Two or more rollers rotating at different speeds and between which the stalks are fed with the run of the fibres parallel to the axes of the rolls may be used, and means may be provided to prevent the delivery of a charge when the quantity thereof exceeds a predetermined amount. The feeding- device consists of an endless chain or band A, Figs. 1 and 3, having parallel strips A<2>, which engage in grooves in a member A<1> on the shaft B<7>, and when the material contained between any two partitions A<2> exceeds a certain amount, it causes an arm B to disengage a clutch on the shaft B<7> and stop the feed. The arm B is carried by a pivoted bracket B<1> having a bolt B<4> engaging a groove B<5> in a member B<6> capable of sliding on the shaft B<7>. A loose wheel. B<8> on the shaft B' gears with a wheel B<9> on the shaft F<12>, and has a projection B<10> engaging in a slot B<11> in the member B<6>. The bamboo is delivered to a pair of fluted or channelled rolls C, C', which mesh with each other and are mounted one above the other with the upper roll slightly to the rear of the lower roll. Ridges of triangular section may be provided at the bottom of each channel to assist in splitting the bamboo &c. The upper roll is mounted in adjustable spring-pressed bearings C<2>, and a stop C<4> limits the minimum distance between the rolls. The material passes from the feed-rolls to a series of reducing-rolls mounted on adjustable shafts D, D<1>, D <2>, D<3>, D<4> and driven at increasing speeds. Adjustable doctors or scrapers provided between the rolls may consist of curved plates or castings with roughened or serrated surfaces, preferably in section like saw-teeth sloped in the direction of travel so as to exert a drag on the material. The rolls may be fluted or serrated, with square, round, or other edges preferably slightly inclined to the axes. The shafts F<9>, F<6> of the feed-rolls C, C<1> are geared together by wheels F<8>, F<7>, and the shaft F<6> is driven' by a wheel F<4> meshing with a pinion on the driving-shaft. The wheel B<9> on the shaft F<12> gears with a wheel F<10> on the shaft F<6>, and the shaft D is driven from the shaft F<6> by wheels F<15>, F<13>, F<7>. The shafts D<1>, D<2> are geared together by wheels F<17>, F<18> and are driven by a wheel F<16> on a shaft F<5> driven from the driving- shaft. The shafts D<3>, D<4> are geared together by wheels F<20>, F<21> and are driven by a wheel F<19> on the shaft F<5>. The rolls may be arranged with their axes in alinement, and a doctor may extend from one roll to a roll next but one to it. The feeding-device, feedrolls, and reducing-rolls may be carried on a common framework, or they may each be carried independently and be adjustable towards or from each other.
