Abstract

9941. Hansen, F., and Mohr, W. F. April 26. Filaments are made hy a paste process from a compound of tungsten and boron prepared as described below. The compound has a higher resistance than pure tungsten, and is obtained as a dark grey or black powder, having a sp. g. of 12-16 and burning if heated above 150‹ C'. in air. It may be squirted with a thick collodion paste, the resulting filaments being carbonized in a vacuum by heating to 850‹ C. and decarbonized and sintered, also in a vacuum, by passage of current. In making the compound, tungsten trioxide is saturated with a hot solution of boric acid, dried, and heated to 700‹ C., the product being reduced by heating with zinc to 1,100‹ C., and subsequently freed from zinc, washed, and dried. According to the Provisional Specification, a mixture of tungsten and boron may be made into filaments or heated previously to form a compound. Also, tungsten may be replaced by tantalum, osmium, tellurium, and the like. Filaments, attaching.-These filaments may be clamped to leading-in wires, but the clips or holders should consist of chromium-nickelsteel or copper, and not of platinum.
