Abstract

8144. Bastian, C. O. Oct. 4. Resistances. - Coiled resistances for use as heaters at high temperatures are formed by winding a single layer of wire on a mandrel so that the contiguous turns are in contact, the wire being provided either before or after winding with an insulating coating of the oxide of the metal of the wire, for instance by heating in a flame or muffle. The coils A may be inserted in quartz tubes B as shown in Fig. 2, the ends a being straightened or otherwise formed to keep the contacts cool. The wire is of fine gauge and may be an alloy of nickel, chromium and aluminium. Specification 19,333/08 is referred to.
