Abstract

6483. Linotype & Machinery, and Field, J. G. W. March 15. Distributing matrices.-Relates to apparatus for separating individual components from a series and successively delivering them to other apparatus, and is especially applicable to the distributing - mechanism of typographical machines such as are described in Specification 14,582/90, in which the lines of matrices from which the type-bars are cast are conveyed to a distributor lift-box 2 having a verticallyreciprocating lifter 8, by which the matrices are successively raised into engagement with a toothed distributor-bar 6, along which they are fed by screws 3 until they fall into the proper magazine channels 7. To prevent thick matrices from coming in contact with one another and consequently jamming, these are, as heretofore, raised only at alternate operations of the lifter. This is effected, according to the present invention, by providing the lifter 8 with a stud or projection 13, Fig. 4, and the wall of the distributor-box with two inclined guides or cams 14, 15. When a thick matrix is raised by the lifter 8 and is moved to the left by the feed-screws 3, it carries the lifter so far to the left that, upon the descent of the lifter, the stud 13 passes to the left of the guides 14, 15, which prevent the lifter from engaging a new matrix at the following ascent. The lifter is then returned to normal position by a spring 10, so that it raises another matrix at the third ascent. Thin matrices do not move the lifter sufficiently far to the left for the stud 13 to engage the guide 14, so that a matrix is raised at each ascent of the lifter.
