Abstract

6207. Granville, B. March 12. Fibres, obtaining.-In a method of excavating and separating peat fibre, a powerful jet from an hydraulic nozzle b cuts the peat from the bog and carries it down channels having grids 2<1> for intercepting logs, to a sump 2, in which is a beater with revolving arms. The material is then pumped to an inclined washer 5 having two rotating shafts 6 provided with helicallyarranged beater arms, which force the peat out of the higher end of the washer, heavier substances gravitating to the lower end. The material is then passed into rotary screens 8 provided with water jets 10, dirt and water passing through the screens to a settling-tank 12. From the screens the material passes to a drum 12<1> supplied with clean water and having a rotating shaft with beater arms at an angle, then through a flat screen 13 which removes sticks, and into a rotary screen 17 which removes part of the water. The fibre may be next passed to wet paper making machines and then made into bales; or the fibre is led by a channel 21 to a reservoir 19 with a floating water outlet 23 leading to a tank 22, from which the water may be drawn for re-use. A rotary screen may replace the flat screen 13. Fig. 3 shows an apparatus which may be used for de-watering the fibre. A pipe 26 conveys water and fibre to the top of a conical screen 25, on which fibre falls and forms a pile, water being caught by a pan 28 and carried away by a pipe 29. After de-watering, the fibre may be treated with a weak alkaline solution, washed with water, treated with a weak acid solution, and again washed. The fibre may then be utilized for half-stuff, papermaking, paper-boards, or other purposes.
