Machine guns; cartridge belts. - Relates to automatic feed-mechanism for cartridge belts of machine guns, of the type actuated from the breech-block or bolt of the gun, the belt being perforated to engage projections on an intermittently rotated drum. The invention is especially applicable to the guns described in Specifications 28,587/07, 17,211/09, and 9118/10, [all in Class 119, Small-arms], and consists in the combination and arrangement of parts described below. A drum c, Figs. 2 and 3, is provided with teeth c<1> engaging holes d<1> in the belt d, the drum being intermittently rotated, in one direction, by spur gearing c<2>, e<1>, a shaft within a sleeve f geared thereto by a one-way ratchet clutch and provided with a groove f engaged by a projection g<1> on the sliding bolt cover g, or by a projection on the heel of the bolt. A pawl p, Fig. 3, prevents backward rotation of the drum c. The cartridges are removed from the clips i by inclined fingers k which guide the cartridges to the feed-opening b. The rear part of each clip presses the cartridge upon its seat, as shown in Fig. 3. A curved guide-plate n is provided on the side from which the belt is fed, and rollers o, preferably mounted in extensions of the fingers k, hold the empty part of the belt clear of the gun. The drum c has its bearings in the lower ends of slots in plates s, t and in removable slides s', t<1> which are connected by a bar u and held in position by a forward extension v of the top plate of the lock case.
