Abstract

4044. Thornton, J. E. Feb. 17. Chromo - gelatine and like processes; kinematograph picture films.-In producing kinematograph films without using silver sensitive salts, the images are of any desired colour and are formed in pure dye or lake of such dye. The base of celluloid, cellulose acetate, gelatine or paper is coated with a thin substratum layer of gelatine and then with a colloid layer which is sensitized with bichromate. The film is printed by exposing it for a lengthened period to a light of high actinic but low heating power. The unaltered bichromate salts are washed out with water, and the reduced chromate salts removed with sodium bisulphite, or sulphuric acid. The film is then treated with a dye which is chosen according to whether a negative or positive film is required, and which stains the soft unexposed gelatine or the hardened exposed gelatine as the case may be. The image is then fixed with a mordant which also precipitates the dye as an insoluble lake. Solucions of chrome alum, copper sulphate, ironalum, tannin or tartar emetic may be used. After drying, the film is given a protecting- coating of varnish, celluloid, or gelatine, and is subsequently perforated. For the different processes in preparing the film, apparatus such as is described in Specifications 26,997/11, 3384/12, 12,230/12, and 14,433/12 may be used.
