Differential or balance gearing.-The differential gear of a motor-car is constructed so as to offer considerable frictional resistance to a differential action, such resistance being proportional to the load. As shown in Fig. 1, the spur planet-pinions of the gear are replaced by pinions c, c' having helical teeth of steep angle, the pinions being mounted in a carrier b and gearing with each other and with similar pinions a, a' on the divided axle x, x<1>. When bevel-pinions are used, the teeth are shaped so that their obliquity of reaction is increased, and the wheels are mounted in conical brake boxes so as to increase the resistance to differential action. The planet-pinions e are mounted on conical blocks s<1> keyed to the pins v, and the sun pinions d fit within blocks s keyed to the planet-carrier frame w.
