Abstract

22,377. Charlesworth, J., and Jubb, A. Oct. 11. Embossing and stamping; bronzing. - A machine for removing surplus metal from paper, cardboard, leather, and like goods which have been blocked with gold leaf or like material is constructed with reciprocating brushes, or wipers, arranged in a closed casing, nipping- rollers for feeding the goods past the brushes, and a fan acting to draw the surplus metal from t h e casing in which the wipers are arranged. As shown, the blocked goods are fed by rollers 3, 3<1>, Figs. 1 and 3, over a platform 10, and while passing over this the goods are acted on by a brush 11 carried by rods 12 which are reciprocated by an eccentric 13 on a driving-shaft 14, which also drives by worm gearing the rollers 3, 3<1> and other feed rollers 4, 4<1>. The upper rollers 3, 4 are pressed towards the lower rollers 3<1>, 4<1> by springs 5 acting on bearers 6 and adjustable by wing nuts 8, and the rods 12 pass through blocks 12<1>, which can be similarly adjusted to vary the pressure of the brush on the work. The brushes and rollers are enclosed in a casing 21 formed by sides 22 and a removable cover 23, the platform 10 forming the bottom. A fan 25 communicating by a pipe 26 and air-box 27 with the casing 21 removes the surplus metal from the casing, and delivers it by an outlet 25<1> to a chamber 29, preferably fitted with perforated doors or panels 29<1> which permit escape of air. The fan is driven from a pulley on the shaft 14. Two or more brushes may be fitted in the casing 21. In a modification, the goods are carried by a supporting-band past cylindrical brushes, or rollers covered with felt, which are given combined rotary and reciprocating motions. Or three sets of feed-rollers may be used for feeding the goods past similar brushes or wipers.
