Furnace details.-An old carbon electrode is joined to a new one by a carbon connecting-piece in which one or more metal rods of circular, triangular, quadrangular, or polygonal crosssection are embedded. The connecting-piece is screwed, dovetailed, or otherwise joined to both electrodes. Fig. 8 shows an electrode e having a boring d into which a connecting-piece, shown in Fig. 4, is screwed. The connecting - piece contains a metal rod b, flanged at each end, which may make contact with a flanged or other metal rod f in the electrode e.
