Abstract

Enveloping in special media; insulation. - Electric motors and dynamos, particularly such as are required to work amid unfavourable surroundings, as, for example, when coupled to submerged water pumps or drills, are completely encased, and the enclosed spaces filled with a practically incompressible electric insulating- substance, such as oil. The oil is kept under a pressure sufficient to cause it to exude slowly through the packed gland C' by means of a plunger sliding in a close-fitting sleeve in the casing, or by making a portion F of the casing flexible and applying a pressure thereto by means of a buffer F<1>. The supply of oil in the casing may be replenished at intervals through a flexible pipe G, and the necessary pressure within the casing may be obtained by employing a sufficient head of oil or by means of a pump, a pressure gauge being provided, if required. The oil is kept cool by a circulating-coil E and by radiating-gills E<1> on the casing. The oil may serve as the insulating-medium between the windings, which may be merely bound with cotton or linen tape to keep them apart..
