Abstract
15,832. Williams, W. A. July 7. Weighing cargo by displacement of ship.- The amount of cargo placed on board and also the total displacement of a vessel is ascertained by weighing a volume of water in a shell model of the exterior of the vessel between the two load-lines, the volume of water being dependent upon the line of flotation. The mould A is placed on the platform of a weighing-machine, which is so supported that it may be accurately levelled fore and aft and athwartships. For this purpose it is suspended by links b from a slide c adjustable by the screw e, the other end being mounted in a ball-and-socket joint g on the bulkhead. The rod l is set to correspond with the. line of flotation, and the shell A is filled with water up to the lower end of the rod l. The locking-pieces h are then removed and the weight determined after levelling the platform a.
