Abstract
12,828. Smith, Major, & Stevens, Major, C. G., and Kennard, G. May 29. Electro-magnetic actuation. - Two solenoids pulling on the opposite ends of a beam connected to a reversing - switch are electrically interlocked by means of an auxiliary core associated with one of the solenoids, so that, in the event of the two solenoids being accidentally energized at the same time, one is immediately cut out and the reversing-switch left under the entire control of the other. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the auxiliary core G which slides in a hole in the core F of one solenoid B is connected to a brass rod H, which carries a contact J for bridging two terminals K in series with the other solenoid A. The circuits of the solenoids are under the control of switches C, D, and, if these are closed simultaneously, the energization of the solenoid B causes the lower pole of the magnet to draw down the core G against the force of the spring M. The contact J is thus separated from the terminals K, cutting out the solenoid A and leaving the main core F free to move under the control of the solenoid B alone. The auxiliary pole may be energized by a small separate coil in series with one of the solenoids, or it may occupy a position at the side instead of at the centre of the main core. Or it may take the form of a short cylinder embracing the main core, or be placed in a groove in the solenoid frame.
