By acrating ascending column. - In apparatus for lifting and simultaneously cooling or granulating hot material such as molten slag, a conveying orlifting pipe is joined by a " leading- in " pipe adapted to be fed with the hot material and water in such regulated quantities that some of the water is converted into steam so as to effect the lifting of the material. Fig. 1 shows a form of apparatus in which air is also admitted to the lifting-pipe b through an inlet c, the hot material and water being run into the " leading-in " pipe a from the pipes s, w respectively. The evaporation of water in the pipe b lightens the weight of the column and so facilitates the lifting of the material therein, while the quantity of air admitted is regulated automatically by the device shown according to the speed of delivery, so that the greater the speed the less the quantity of air admitted. In a modification, the pipe a is made longer and the water is admitted at a point above the inlet of the molten material, and in a further modification, the pipe a is arranged horizontally.
