Abstract
3636. Fear, F. J. W. Feb. 13. Scissors, shears, and like shearing-instruments. - Relates to scissors, shears, &c. for thinning grapes, cutting flowers, pruning, and surgical purposes, and in which one cutting- blade has a fixed gripping - member and the other blade has a resilient gripping-member for retaining stalks or other objects as they are cut. The resilient member consists of a blade spring, the gripping-part of which has a free end while the other end is screwed upon the blade or a part thereof. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the spring 2 is attached to the face of the blade 1, and the gripping- part 4 conforms to the contour of the cutting- edge; the other blade 5 has a concave wall 6 projecting beyond the cutting-edge 7. In a modification, Fig. 4, the spring 9 is fastened at one end by a pin 10, and passes over the head of the pivot pin 11 and beneath a projecting screw pin 12. In another form, the inner end of the spring is fixed in a recess in the blade, the spring lying along the face of the blade at an angle so that its outer end is first engaged by the end of the opposing blade. A projection on the end of the spring prevents anything from getting between the spring and the point of the blade. In a further modification, the spring is fastened to the stem of the handle of one blade by a clip, and the opposing blade has a flat projecting wall at right-angles to the blade face and parallel with the spring.
