Abstract
30,388. Peterson, R. W. Dec. 31. Swings.-An amusement device consists of one or more passenger cars a<3> pivoted to a grid or platform a<4>, which is in turn suspended by arms a<2> from an axle a<1>. Oscillation about the axle is produced by a motor in gear with the axle. The motor is of small power but is periodically reversed, and thus, in conjunction with the force of gravity, sets up oscillations of increasing amplitude. The cars a<3> are attached to swivels geared or connected with a motor mounted on the grid. By means of this motor, the cars may be continuously rotated about their pivots, or they may be partly rotated so that the passengers always face in the direction of motion of the cars. By this latter method, it is stated that any feeling of nausea may be avoided. Instead of rotating the cars by means of a motor, they may be mounted on pivots arranged eccentrically, and allowed to rotate about these pivots by gravity at the limits of each swing. Access to the cars is obtained by a platform c, mounted on counterbalanced levers c' and raised and lowered by a motor c<2> through the medium of a screw c<4> and connecting rod c<3>.
