Abstract
17,724. Gammon, J. S. July 26. Springs between hub and flexible or non-rigid rim; spokes, securing. - Relates to wheels in which a flexible jointed rim is supported by spring spokes. The rim consists of pieces of sheet metal 23, Fig. 1, bent so as to be of C- shape in section, and formed with flanges 24 the ends of which project and are pivoted together at 26. Similarly curved sleeves 27 are enclosed at the joints. The spokes consist of loops of strip steel, bent into pear-shape. The ends pass through slots 16, Fig. 9, in a flanged hub plate 13, and are spaced by filling-blocks of wood 18. At the points of contact, the spokes are connected by rivets 22. The outermost part of each spoke is formed with lugs 30, Fig. 8, between which is held a transverse clip 28 riveted to a sleeve 27 and one end of a rim member. The rim joints between the spokes are supported by blade springs 31. The ends of the spring are formed with lugs 32, and rest on the spokes. The centre is connected by a clip to the sleeve, as described above. A rubber band 34 is placed around the rim, and the whole is enclosed by a leather jacket 35 the edges of which are buckled together at 38.
