Extracting sugar. - A flexible travelling belt is provided with transverse depressions or projections forming a series of small pressure chambers, and is passed over and under parallel rollers, so that, as the belt alternately assumes a concave and convex form, bagasse &c. fed to the chambers is respectively subjected to compression and released. The belt may be formed by a pair of edge members connected by transverse slats 15, Fig. 5, filtercloth 16 being supported on the surface. T h e cloth is longer than the belt, and is pushed into the chambers by means of a toothed wheel 18, Fig. 1. The bagasse is supplied by a hopper 17. As the belt passes under rollers 3, 5, 7, the pressure chambers close up as shown in Fig. 6, and the liquid is expressed through the cloth into a pan 23. The chambers open out as they pass over the rollers 4, 6, and water, steam, &c., may be delivered from the pipes 20. The solid material is removed by a scraper 21 as the chambers open out in passing over the small roller 8. The belt passes through a wash-tank 25 before returning to the supply-rollers 1, 2. The cross-section of the slats 15 may take the form of a truncated triangle. In the modified apparatus shown in cross-section in Fig. 2, a belt 26 passes around rollers mounted in the ends of a casing 35, which rotates within a stationary casing 38. The material is supplied through a duct 41, and is pressed in the chambers formed by the slats as they pass around the rollers 28, 30. The solid matter is released as the chambers are opened in passing aronnd a roller 31 and thrown centrifugally through an aperture 36 to be swept by a scraper 39 to an outlet 40. The liquid passing through the belt collects on the inner surface of the casing 35, which is provided with a suitable outlet.
