Abstract
16,443. Harris, G. H. July 9. Upward-current classifiers. - A classifier comprises a number of superposed sections, the outlets between which are adjustable, and a valve for controlling the water inlet actuated by a float in the separating - vessel. Water is supplied through a pipe p and a funnelshaped member m to an externallyscrewed pipe k, on which are mounted relatively adjustable e sections b, c, f. The material to be treated is fed through a shoot 20 and a funnel n into the liquid in the section b. The water rises from the bottom of the pipe k through an adjustable grid s and through the sections f, c, b. The lightest and intermediate materials pass out at 2, 2<1>, and are discharged through rotatably adjustable troughs 5 and shoots 6, while the heaviest materials pass through the grid s and an opening r<1> to a shoot z. An annular float 12 in the section b is connected through adjustable rods 11 to plug valves 8, 15 so that a rise in the water-level causes the pipe p to be closed, and the opening r<1> to be further opened, so that the level is rapidly restored. Blades 16 may be provided on the end of the valve-rod 14, so that the valves 8, 15 may be rotated by the outgoing liquid; or the valves may be otherwise rotated. In a modification, the water-level is controlled by a ball-float lever, and the grid s is not adjustable.
