The beaters or blades c<1> are mounted upon arms c attached to a boss a<1> on the driving-shaft a so as to project beyond, and to rotate in a plane spaced apart from, the end of the shaft, so that the long fibres, when carried around by the beaters, do not foul the apparatus. A number of stops e fixed to a strut f extend towards the beaters and prevent the material, which is laid over an adjustable bench d<2> disposed in an opening d<1> in a screen or partition d, from being caught by the beaters and becoming entangled with the arms c.
