Abstract
12,613. Trainer, E. May 24. Composition fuel. - A binder for fuel and other blocks or lumps consists of waste sulphitecellulose lye gelatinized and rendered insoluble in water by heating with an inorganic acid substance such as sulphuric, hydrochloric, or chromic acid, an alum, acid sodium sulphate, or a bichromate, with or without the addition of an aldehyde, the blocks being subsequently heated to dry them. Concentrated lye may, for example, be mixed with from 10 to 15 per cent of sulphuric acid, heated until gelatinization takes place, mixed with fuel, moulded, and dried at about 200‹ C. The gelatinization may be performed before or after mixing the lye with the other materials. When acid is used, it may be in the gaseous state; when aldehyde is used, the excess may be evaporated from the blocks in a vacuum.
