Abstract

7152. Humphrey, H. A. March 22. Direct explosion apparatus.-In apparatus of the type described in Specifications 20,736/06, 18,594/07, 18,595/07, 19,341/07, and 25,638/07, the sudden increase of pressure brought about by the explosion of a preliminary combustible charge is utilized to force a further charge of combustible mixture into the explosion chamber before the first charge has ceased burning, thus obtaining a longer stroke. For this purpose, the combustion chamber 1 is provided with a small branch chamber 2 containing air, which is admitted through a valve 3 and forced out through a valve 4 and pipe 12 immediately after the explosion has taken place in the chamber 1. This pipe 12 conducts the air to an atomizer 11 containing a heavy hydrocarbon, which is sprayed into the combustion chamber through a valve 5 and there ignited. The valves 3, 4 are linked up to the valves 6, 7 so as to secure their operation at the proper intervals; the method of linking-up may be similar to that described in Specification 19,341/07.
