Abstract
5266. Brougham, F. J., [Poldih³tte Tiegelguszstahlfabrik]. March 2. Induction furnaces.- A lining A is approximately uniform in thickness, to avoid cracking, and is provided with one or more yielding layers P of magnesite sand for instance, to allow expansion. The lining A may be cooled by a jacket C, and, as shown in Fig. 5, may have its inner wall inclined less steeply and its outer wall more so than usual, to diminish the liability to cracking; for the same purpose and to prevent molten metal from escaping if cracks occur, the lining, as shown in Fig. 6, may be embedded, all round or at intervals, in lumps of refractory material with sand or the like in the interstices. Parts of'the lining not in contact with the charge, and such parts as the tapping- , spout and elevations for heating the slag, need not be of uniform thickness; the cooler parts, if of brittle material, may be thinner than the remainder. In making the furnace, the lining is rammed in while the expansion spaces P are filled by blocks, which are afterwards withdrawn; the construction shown in Fig. 6 facilitates this.
