Abstract

4534. Nicholson, E. G., and Hill, W. B. Feb. 23. Lift valves; locking valves and cocks. - A valve for drawing - off liquids from drums, barrels, tanks, &c. consists of a casing B, screw-threaded at M for attachment to the vessel, and containing a tubular sliding member C having a side opening F and a washer N. The valve is opened by withdrawing the tube C so as to uncover the opening F. When the valve is closed, the washer N seats upon the casing. The valve may be locked when closed by means of a bar J, which engages under the sloping end H of the casing. Rotation of the valve causes the bar J to ride up the slope H, and so draw the valve tightly to its seat. When the valve is being opened, the bar J slides in slots L in the casing. A removable handle 0 may be provided.
