Abstract
3243. Fitzgerald, W. G. Feb. 10. Diving. -Relates to appliances for regulating the depth attained by diving-bells &c. The supporting - cable a is payed out from a drum k by a motor l and passes over guide-pulleys h, g<1>, g, d and through a well b in the service vessel c. The pulley d is supported by a plunger working in a barrel f containing compressed air or a spring. The system of links and bellcrank levers shown in the Figure is used to connect the pulleys d, h and a valve v of a controlling-motor. The arrangement is such that, as the position of the vessel c alters, the pull on the cable and the resultant force on the pulley d alters and the pulley is disturbed, and, by means of the levers, moves the valve v from its mid-position; and pressure fluid moves the rod i and pulley h to adjust the length of the depending part of the cable. The movement of the rod l is utilized to return the valve to its mid-position.
