Abstract

3213. Feidt, J. Feb. 9. [Addition to 3212/10.] Rack-and-pinion actuated pumps.-In rack- and-pinion devices of the kind described in the parent Specification, for converting rotary into reciprocating motion for driving pumps &c., the frame constituting the reciprocating member is formed with two symmetricallydisposed rack portions and is provided with means causing transverse displacement at each end of the stroke. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the pinion 2 drives a rack frame 3 mounted between transverse guides A on a reciprocatory slide-block 4, which is connected by a rod 5 to a crank on a second shaft 6. As the connecting-rod 5 oscillates, a forked arm 7 thereon operates a slide plate 9 with camslots 10, whereby the rack frame 3 is moved transversely at each end of its reciprocation to bring the upper and lower racks alternately into engagement with the rotary pinion 2. A modified arrangement is shown as means for converting the rotary motion of the shaft 6 into reciprocatory motion of pump pistons working in a pair of cylinders 25. In this case, the pinion 15 engages alternately a pair of partly straight, partly segmental racks 16<a> formed on the inner edges of a frame 16 mounted as before between transverse guides on the reciprocatory member 17. The form of the racks causes the frame to move transversely at each end of the stroke, parallelism being maintained by means of levers 20, 21, which are mounted on pivots 22, 23 on the slide 17, being pivoted together at 24 and connected to the frame by links 18, 19. To guide the frame 16 during its longitudinal movement, a rib 27 thereon bears between three rollers 31 carried by a rotatable disk 28 mounted on the bedplate 30, the disk being progressively rotated through angles of 60 degrees by the transverse movement of the frame at each end of the stroke.
