Delivery apparatus.-Transverse folding-mechanism of the kind in which a folding- blade on a carrier folds the paper into gripping-jaws on a carrier which carries the folded sheet to delivery mechanism is constructed with gripping-devices and carriers adapted to fold a number of thicknesses of paper, and with modified means for operating the jaws and for co - operating with them to guide the folded product to the delivery mechanism. As shown, the paper is led from cutting-cylinders 12, 13 between guides 18, 19 to a cylinder 23 or other moving carrier, which may be provided with grippers &c. for holding the paper on the carrier. A projecting folding- blade 27 on the carrier 23 tucks the paper into folding jaws 51, 59, Figs. 1 and 3, which are pivoted in recesses in rollers 47, 54, and are pressed together by adjustable springs 52, 60. The rollers 47, 54 are geared together and are mounted respectively in arms 46 pivoted to arms 38 of a frame 37 and in arms 56, which are pivoted in the arms 46 and are pressed towards the arms 46 by spring-pressed rod 65 acting on arms 56<a> of the levers 56. When the paper is tucked into the jaws 51, 59, the frame 3 is moved to the left against the action of springs 44 by cams 32, which act on rollers 43 on links 41 formed with forked ends 42 embracing the shaft of the cams. A gear-wheel 48 on the roller 47 engages a fixed rack 49, and, as the frame 37 moves, the rollers 47, 54 are rotated in the direction of the arrows in Fig. 3, and the paper is held by the grippers for a part of the rotation of the rollers and is advanced over a guide 77. When the paper is released from the grippers, it is advanced by' flanges 47<a>, 54<a> on the rollers and is guided by trough-shaped guides 78, which receive the edges of the paper, and is directed to a delivery cylinder 81 in a direction tangential to the cylinder. The guides 78 are concentric with a shaft 35, on which the frame 37 is freely mounted. When the cylinders have completed one revolution, the arms 46 are raised by rods 70 and cams 36 acting on rollers 75 kept in contact with the cams by springs 74 acting on arms 72 connecting forked ends 71 of the rods 70. The rollers thus cease to rotate, and at about the same time the upper roller 54 is raised from the roller 47, to free the paper from the grippers and permit the cylinder 81 to grip it, by the action of cams 80 on rollers 69 carried by the levers 56. From the cylinder 81 the paper is directed to a belt 93 by strippers 94. In a modified form of apparatus, a camoperated folding blade, which is projected only during the folding operation, is employed; the wheel 48 is constantly in gear with its fixed rack; and the frame 37 is actuated by a closed instead of an open cam.
