[Cognate Application, 12,741/10.] Circulating or passing fluids through materials. -The apparatus consists of a treating-vat in which there are suitable pipe connexions at different points connected with the top and bottom of a boiler so that the liquid in the boiler may be circulated upwards or downwards. The connexions in the vat 7 consist of two sets 8, 10 of perforated pipes arranged round the walls of the vat connected, through suitable valves, with the top and bottom of the boiler 2, which is steam-heated by means of a pipe 4 and ring 3. Preferably, in use, a layer of material is laid in the vat 7, and then a double tray 22, 23 (shown on edge at the top of the Figure) placed on top of it resting with its upper part 22 on the lowest pipe 8; further material is placed on this tray, and then another tray, and so on. The treating-liquid then circulates from one set of perforated pipes 10 to the other 8, or vice versa, depending on how the valves are set. In a modification, one inlet ring at the bottom of the vat is provided, preferably in conjunction with a false bottom, a number of outlet rings higher up being provided.
