Abstract

Rollers.-The outer shell of a grinding and crushing roller is divided transversely into two parts a, b, Fig. 1, which are supported at the outer ends by cones d, e having their largest diameters at the outer ends, and at the inner ends by a double cone c having its largest diameter at the centre. The shells, which are tapered internally at the ends, are secured by keys or wedges driven into slots cut in the cones, and white metal &c. is run into the spaces between the shells and cones. The double cone c is keyed permanentlv to the shaft f, and the outer cones are secured by keys h, j and connected by bolts n with nuts p, q. The shells can be removed and reversed when worn, without heating, by unscrewing the nuts p, q and driving out the keys h, j. In a modification, the outer shell is in one piece. Figs. 5 and 6 show the method of building up a roller. The double cone c having been keyed to the shaft, one part b of the outer shell is placed in position on the cone c, and the space r to be left between the cone c and the end cone d is filled with clay. The cone d is next keyed lightly to the shaft, and trued up by driving the wedges into the slots between the shell and the cone. To facilitate the running-in of the metal into the spaces m, a temporary band u lined on the inside with clay as at v is employed, and, in the case of the end cones, a ring w of clay may be used. The roller is next placed vertical with the shell b at its lower end, and the shell a placed on the cone c and temporarily secured in place by a stay bracket x having arms with set-screws y at the ends. Metal is run into the space at the lower end of the shell a, and the space z is filled with clay. The bracket x is then removed and the cone e placed in position, after which metal is run into the remaining space m, and, when the metal is cool, the bolts n are placed in position and tightened up so as to draw the parts together.
