Electrode f u rnaces.-A furnace having a superposed charging- shaft 2, through which passes a vertical electrode, is provided with wide slots 5 which run towards the middle of the furnace and can be closed by sand-seated covers 6. The ahaft 2 opens into the furnace through a water-cooled cone 3. The slots 6 may be used for observing the process, for stirring or charging, or as gas exits, and the covers 6 may act as safety-valves for relieving excessive internal pressure.
