Abstract
25,118. Imray, O., [Society of Chemical Industry in Basle]. Nov. 1. Alkalies and chlorine, obtaining; cells; electrolytes, treating non - chemically.- In apparatus for the c o n t i n u o u s electrolysis of aqueous solutions, weakened aqueous electrolyte flowing from an upper electrode to a lower electrode is enriched by feeding solid salt into the upper electrode compartment near that electrode, in order more completely to drive back newly formed hydroxyl or other ions. The salt, such as chloride of sodium or potassium, may be fed on to a plate 7, Fig. 1, within a bell 2 containing the anode 1, or into a trough-shaped gas-trap over the cathode, or into a fabric which is either of zigzag shape, so as to form a gas-trap at the bottom of the bell, or is flat and is placed over such a gas-trap 23, Fig. 4, and the cathode 14 so as to lengthen the path of flow of the strong solution. The fabric must be too porous to act as a diaphragm.
