Abstract
24,320. Strange, E. H. Oct. 22. Casting-machines; casting processes; moulds.- Metal strips or sheets are cast by the use of apparatus of the kind described in Specification 6630/07, a cylinder, disk, band, &c. being moved in contact with molten metal, drawing it under tensional action from the end of one or more channels, one of the transverse edges of which is in contact with the moving body. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a hollow cylinder A cooled by air, water-jacketing, spraying, &c. rotates in contact with a channel E, which abuts against the cylinder at its rear edge, and in its front wall has an opening f, which may be adjustable for the delivery of the metal. The sheet i is directed by guides j, and may be received in a receptacle or rolled up. In order to obtain defined edges, the side edges of the channel are made to abut against the cylinder. The top of the channel may be open or closed to any desired extent to prevent oxidation. The metal may be drawn up the cylinder in the form shown in Fig. 2; and a modification is shown in which the channel is arranged vertically below the cylinder. When defined edges are not required, the back edge of the channel only need be in contact with the moving body. The channel may be arranged vertically above the moving body or at any angle. A layer of charcoal or other reducing or protective agent may be placed on the molten metal in the channel to avoid oxidation, or the operation may be effected in an inert atmosphere- The metal in the channel may be heated to keep it molten, baffle or protective plates being inserted between the source of heat and the moving body. According to the Provisional Specification, the channel may be arranged inside the moving body. Specifications 14,252/84 and 6464/90 are referred to.
