Portable cranes, preventing overturning of; jib cranes.-The portable crane, which consists of a vertically movable standard B, raised by hydraulic or other means F, and to which is attached an arm C capable of swinging in a horizontal plane, is mounted on castors 31, carried by folding legs, and interlocking means are provided which prevent the arm C from being rotated unless the legs are fully extended, or the legs from being folded unless the arm is in a position of safety. In the arrangement shown the legs 32, Fig. 4, are pivoted at 32<Î> in order that they may be folded parallel to a fixed leg 30<1>, or extended laterally thereto. The folding and extending are accomplished by links 33, 34, 35 and a lever 36, which on being raised, extends the legs, and by means of a bolt 38, draws out a spring-pressed rod 46 from a hole 45 in a collar 43 feathered on the standard B, and releases the arm C. The legs cannot be folded unless the arm C is in a safety position in which the hole 45 registers with the rod 46. The plunger B is raised by forcing liquid into the cylinder F from the reservoir 30 by means of a treadle 48. A manually-operated return valve and safety port are also provided. A hand-actuated or automatic brake is provided which hold the apparatus against movement when in use. In a modification, the apparatus is mounted on large wheels and has two folding legs which fold parallel to one another for transport.
