Abstract

13,381. Hopkins, A. E., and Fellows, O. S. June 8. Stream-cutting machines.-A strip of material fed through a shoot D<4>, Fig. 1, is severed by knives d<2> carried by an intermittently rotating table D, against which the strip is forced by arms G, G<1>, operated by an eccentric g. A knife g<2>, Fig. 10, scores the strip opposite the knives. The arm G is prevented from rotating by means of a link h<1>, Fig. 1, pivoted to a pin h<2> and hinged to an arm h ; the arm G<1> is capable of a slight oscillatory motion by means of a pin-and-slot connexion g<5>, Fig. 10, and is retracted by a spring g<6>. A guard D<3> retains the severed pieces until they come opposite to a delivery shoot x, into which they are discharged by means of a plunger carried by links i, i<1> and operated by a cam disk I<1>, lever i<4>, and link i<6>. The end of the link i<6> is slotted to embrace a roller i<7>, Fig. 14, and is held in engagement therewith by means of a spring-pressed finger i9, which rides over the roller in case of obstruction. The end of the guard D<3> is cut away as shown in Fig. 12<a> to form a die to trim the edges of the cut piece. The table D is carried by a hollow spindle C', Fig. 4, mounted within a bearing C and is operated by means of a pinion d' meshing with an internal gear d ; the pinion d<1> is carried by a shaft D<1> which is operated intermittently by geneva-stop gearing D<2>, e<1>, driven continuously from the main shaft through gearing. The table may be rotated continuously, and the knives d<2> may be so arranged on the table that the strip is engaged from the outer side.
