Abstract

13,205. Johnston, J. June 5. Feed - water, supplying and controlling. - Relates to float apparatus for controlling the supply of feed-water to a boiler. The float is contained in a chamber a, connected to the water-space of the boiler by a pipe c, and to the steam-space by a pipe d entering the chamber a at the normal water-level. The water enters the boiler by a pipe t fitted with an injector appliance s, which withdraws air and steam from the upper part of the chamber a. In consequence, when the opening of the pipe d is sealed by the rise of the water, the last few strokes of the feed-pump produce a partial vacuum in the upper part of the chamber a, thus retaining the water therein at a high level until the water-level in the boiler falls low enough to admit steam by the pipe d. The float is of the counterbalanced type, the upper float e being made of aluminium and the lower j, which has a dash-pot action in the lower part of the casing a, of lead. The two floats are connected by opposing levers, f, l, or by a chain passing over a pulley. The valve is operated from the pivot of the lever f or from the pulley.
