Abstract

11,764. Bickerton, H. L. May 18. Fixed - abutment type; balancing moving parts.-In a turbine or rotary engine, pump, compressor, meter, or hydraulic or explosion motor, of the kind in which a disk mounted on the main shaft runs in a cylindrical casing and is connected by one or more hinged vanes or flaps with an eccentrically-mounted drum, the main shaft is arranged to pass through the casing from side to side, and the eccentric drum is mounted in a special manner. The vane or flap is arranged so that it comes almost into contact with the inner surface of the casing. so that the fluid impinges on, and presses on the flap to cause rotation. The inlet passage v for the working fluid is directed tangentially to the circumference of the eccentric drum n. The rush of fluid produces a partial vacuum behind it which counteracts any leakage tendency between the inlet v and the exhaust w. The disk e mounted on the main shaft b runs, in the example shown, centrally in the cylindrical casing a, and its periphery may come into contact with the cylinder at some points, but there is preferably a slight clearance. The disk is perforated or slotted to allow equalization of the fluid pressures on each side. On each side of the disk e, an eccentrically-mounted drum n rotates about a fixed shaft or pin f, and a central portion o is cut away so that the drum rests on loose sleeves m on fixed pins k, and a loose sleeve h on the shaft b. A loose sleeve q is also provided on the shaft f. A vane or flap p is hinged at one end q to the drum n and at the other end to a pin r on a guide-block s attached to the disk -e. The drum n is provided with a cut-away portion t on which the flap p folds back during the rotation, while it is passing the portion u of the casing, with which the drum n always comes into close contact or nearly so Suitable valves are provided for cutting off the fluid supply before or at the time when the flap p is passing the exhaust w, and also for reversing purposes. The loose sleeve h on the main shaft b may be dispensed with; or a sleeve may be fixed to the shaft b and replaced after wear; or the shaft b may pass through a fixed sleeve, which makes contact with the sleeve g. The pins supporting the drum n may be additionally stayed and distanced by a plate inside the casing against the disk e. The engine may be compounded and the main shaft extended to serve for each engine. The disk e may be arranged near to one side of the casing, only one eccentric drum being then used.
