Abstract
9327. Brindley, H. S. B., and Berry, H. April 20. Actuating valves; combinations of interdependent valves.-Controlling-valves for fluid under pressure, of the kind in which the inlet and exhaust valves are arranged in a common chamber and one valve serves as the seat for the other valve, are provided with means whereby the valves are automatically held on their seatings in a single acting arrangement. Fig. 1 shows one form, in which the inlet valve e seats upon the exhaust valve d, which itself seats upon the casing c. Pressure fluid enters the passage a, and is led to the cylinder through the port f, and to the exhaust through the port b. The valve d is held against its seat bv fluid pressure or spring pressure, and is forced away by the downward motion of the valve e caused bv the rotation of a crank-pin h. A port g allows the fluid pressure to act on the top of the valve e. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the valve d is formed with a reduced extension d<1> and is closed at one end, pressure fluid being admitted to the interior of the valve by port l. A passage n allows communication between the end of the part d<1> and the passage f. Fig. 5 shows a modified form of single-acting valve. The exhaust valve d is formed with an open extension d' in which fits a piston e', carried on an extension e<2> of the inlet valve e. This is held on its seating by the difference in pressure on the areas of the parts e<3>, e. Channels n are formed in the valve e, extensions e<2>, and piston e<3> to admit fluid to the underside of the valve extension d' to neutralize the effect of the pressure on the top of the valve d.
