Abstract

[Cognate Application, 16,174/09.] Dynamos and motors, cooling and ventilating; casings.-In enclosed machines, such as mine motors, in which the casing of the machine is provided with an outer shell or envelope, and cooling-air is circulated either between the casing and the envelope or through radiator tubes through the machine, the envelope is provided with an inlet or outlet opening co-axial with the shaft, and is independent of the shaft and bearings, so that it can be removed if required. In one modification, Fig. 2, fan blades m, secured to the pulley n, circulate air between the shell f and the casing e, which is provided with internal and external fins g, i, conical projections, or other extended surfaces for the absorption and radiation of heat. The casing may be corrugated. The air within the motor is kept in circulation by fan blades k. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, one end of the casing is provided with a cover t having an opening t<1>, and sets of radiator tubes s, extending through the machine, are secured in boxes r<1> fastened in a fluid-tight manner to the end covers q. Air is circulated through the tubes and the cover t by means of a fan u. In induction motors, the tubes s are led through wide holes in the stator core. Alternatively a cooling-liquid may be caused to flow through the tubes by means of a pump connected thereto.
