Abstract

5618. Gill, J. March 9. Iron oxides and hydrates; manganese chloride.- Ferric hydrate is precipitated from ferrous-chloride liquors, such as galvanizers'or wire-drawers' liquor, by treating with calcium carbonate and forcing carbonic acid and air into the liquor, while the liquor is maintained at a temperature and pressure above normal. Or the calcium carbonate may be treated in a separate vessel with carbonic acid under pressure, and the solution of bicarbonate added to the ferrous-chloride liquor. The precipitation is effected in a steam-jacketed pan A with a perforated false bottom a, beneath which the mixture of carbonic acid and air under pressure is supplied. A stirring-apparatus c keeps the liquor in agitation, and the escaping gases are led off by a pipe D<1> and returned to the carbonic-acid generator B for reuse, any steam being condensed in a coil E. The precipitate, before calcination to oxide, is treated with hydrochloric acid to remove any manganese oxides present, the liquors so obtained being used for the precipitation of siennas and umbers.
