Abstract

1405. Milde, W. H. Jan. 20. Safety-valves; pressure-relieving devices for fluids.-Cans, tanks, barrels, &c. for volatile or inflammable liquids are provided with relief valves or equivalents kept closed against the pressure of a spring by a composition that melts at a predetermined temperature to allow gas or vapour to escape and prevent all risk of explosions. The cap a, Fig. 1, is provided with holes d, e preferably conical, opening into a cylindrical cavity partly filled with composition f, which retains a gauze disk g, in the position shown, against the action of a spring p. When the composition melts, it is forced out of the holes d, e, by the disk g and a perforated plate h. Vapour then escapes through the holes d, e, which are covered by the gauze disk g. A gauze tube may also be provided in the ordinary way below the orifice of the tank &c. The disk may be replaced by a cylinder comprising an unperforated plate q, Fig. 5, a perforated plate s, and wire-gauze r. A plug w, Fig. 7, containing a ball vent valve, may be screwed into a hole in the cap a. In this case, the spring 2 bears on a ring 3 screwed into the cap.
