  • Filtration Of Liquid (AREA)

Abstract

27,272. Marks, E. C. R., [Oliver-Roche Co.]. Dec. 15. Floating filters.-Water enters a settling-tank A by a pipe 2 with a float-operated valve 3, and filters upwards into a floating chamber B through layers of carbon and sand separated by a copper or brass screen and supported on a screen of galvanized iron 19 resting on inclined slats on concrete girders 16. The filtered water passes through a flexible pipe 14 to a chamber 32 having an outlet 33 of smaller capacity than would be required by the normal rate of filtration, so that the liquid-level in the chamber 32 is that of the overflow 34. When the filter is clogged, this level falls and a float 29 opens a valve 24 on a by-pass 23 which delivers water from the pipe 2 to float chambers 8. The result is a lowering of the filter, which gives increased pressure through it and maintains the rate of filtration. The float 29 closes the valve 24 when the liquid level in the chamber 32 has again risen. When the water has risen above a normal level in the chambers 8, a float 35 closes the valve 24 by means of a lever arm 36 and a rod 37.
